Complete Coronavirus Liar Ad Fact Check, Sources and Content Guide
Segment 1 - MSNBC’s AM Joy, January 22nd, 2017 - “You cannot say there’s alternative facts” Scott Dworkin says “Americans will die because of Trump’s lies." The full episode and Scott's appearance only are here.
We flipped the chyron from the end of the 6 second clip of Scott we used in the ad from the end to the beginning, but it’s the same chyron they used in real time. In the ending, we added our website info instead of the original chyron introducer, and on both instances, we covered the “MSNBC” logo with the Democratic Coalition logo so viewers would not believe this was a current news program.
Segment 2 - Fox News, March 31, 2020 - “You closed the pandemic office?” The next exchange we show is Donald Trump and Fox News WH correspondent John Roberts.
Roberts declares “You closed the pandemic office?” We jump cut Roberts’ finishing phrase “in the National Security Council”” because “the pandemic office” is the common meaning of the team dismissed from the White House, even without specifying it was in the NSC becase that is just its bureaucratic designation. Donald Trump replied “We didn’t do that, that turned out to be a false story.” Fox's coverage.
The answer to this is in several parts:
1) The NSC’s Pandemic Office was closed by the administration as a National Security Council agency. The office was removed from the White House’s organizational table. That’s not debatable.
2) However, there’s another “pandemic office” that the White House disbanded last year, which was based in Wuhan, China and had the role of predicting influenza outbreaks. It’s not mentioned in our ad directly.
3) The Trump Administration also ended the CDC’s long-standing post in China is another “pandemic office” which we feature later in the ad.
4) Former NSC health unit head Dr. Beth Cameron was a career official and wrote a Washington Post op-ed entitled, "Trump Closed the White House Pandemic Office. I ran it."
The NSC health office ended as a unit when it merged into another operation, whose leader Tim Morrison a political appointee of the Trump White House and general intelligence specialist, who then too left the government. The relevance here is that a full agency has a specialized director and reports directly to the National Security Advisor (NSA) who reports to the president. A sub-agency reports to a generalist, like Mr. Morrison who isn’t a medical specialist, who then reports to the NSA. It’s a crucial change in the organizational chart, regardless of if some personnel are retained.
Later, Tim Morrison explained the shuffle that demoted Pandemic preparedness as an independent directorate, which undoubtedly broke up the then existing leadership team in the White House in his own WaPo op-ed.
We end this section of our ad with Cameron’s statement and not Morrison, because she’s a career health official and he’s a political appointee. In our opinion, her description of the “closing of the pandemic office” is the most accurate one. The clip is from Bloomberg TV.
Feature element - Unemployment weekly claims chart
The source of our unemployment chart is mortgage agency Freddy Mac’s Deputy Chief Economist Len Kiefer. As of today, April 16th, 2020 a total of 22 million Americans have filed unemployment, up from 16.7 million in our ad. The chart is used strictly as a visual overlay and clue (or teaser) throughout the ad without reference or claim. At the at the ending of the video, the chart is shown to proper scale where it is spotlighted with real figures from the DOL that we updated to present time from April 3rd. These figures can can be found on Kiefer’s feed via the DOL. He’s not affiliated with the Democratic Coalition, we’re just using his graphic of the DOL figures as the basis for this element of our ad.
Segment 3 - Fox News, March 31, 2020 White House Briefing - “100-200 thousand deaths”
Watch Dr. Birx deliver the difficult truth here, that a lot of Americans are going to die from covid19.
Later at the same WH briefing with Dr. Birx and the chart Trump said in response to the new model predicting hundreds of thousand American deaths: "I think I've done a really good job of mobilizing."
We cut the phrase “of mobilizing” becuase the thrust of his sentence is self-congratulations after the disease models showing mass casualties have been released in response to a question about the mass casualty charts.
Segment 4 - Joe Biden - “Munich Security Conference - February 2019”
Watch Joe Biden's complete speech here. The clip is from minutes 15-16.
Reuters, Trump fired the doctor who was the CDC’s China officer.
This 2012 CDC Fact-sheet featured in the spot about its activities in China.
